Elijah And Fire From Heaven
So Ahab sent a message among all the sons of Israel and brought the prophets together at Mount Carmel. Elijah came near to all the people and said, "How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him." But the people did not answer him a word. Then Elijah said to the people, "I alone am left a prophet of the LORD, but Baal's prophets are 450 men. "Now let them give us two oxen; and let them choose one ox for themselves and cut it up, and place it on the wood, but put no fire under it; and I will prepare the other ox and lay it on the wood, and I will not put a fire under it. "Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD, and the God who answers by fire, He is God." And all the people said, "That is a good idea."*
The people of Israel could not decide who to follow with all their heart, Baal or God. They ended up trying to serve both. Even today some people try to serve two masters. They love the world and would follow any desire they may have for a better life instead of following God. Jesus said:
No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.*
Some of the Israelites worshiped Baal, the god of the weather, in hopes that it would make their lives better. God stopped the rain and no matter how much the people prayed to Baal the land remained dry. Now Elijah has called the people together to see who they will serve. The competition is about to begin. The good news is you, along with Elijah can be on the side of the winner.

Special Note: The Old Testament will refer to the descendents of Jacob who were slaves in Egypt as: My people, Hebrews, Sons of Israel, Children of Israel, Israel, Israelites and Jews.
