After forty years of traveling through the wilderness, the Children of Israel are about to enter the Promised Land. Joshua sends some spies to the first city that they must conquer (Jericho). The spies do not go unnoticed, but one resident woman named Rahab protects the spies from getting killed. As she keeps them in hiding she tells them:
I know that the LORD has given you the land, and that the terror of you has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land have melted away before you. "For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed. "When we heard it, our hearts melted and no courage remained in any man any longer because of you; for the LORD your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath. "Now therefore, please swear to me by the LORD, since I have dealt kindly with you, that you also will deal kindly with my father's household, and give me a pledge of truth, and spare my father and my mother and my brothers and my sisters, with all who belong to them, and deliver our lives from death."*
Rahab knows a lot about the Hebrews. Perhaps, ever since she was a little girl she has heard about the powerful God of the Hebrews. Not only her, but the people of that land are living in fear wondering when this amazing nation and their mighty God will enter the Promised Land. It seems like the whole known world has been watching this new nation that God is making. They even know that God has promised the land to the Hebrews. Rahab is recognized in the New Testament as a woman of faith.
By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish along with those who were disobedient, after she had welcomed the spies in peace.*
Rahab was saved because she believed in the one true God, and by faith joined His side. The good news is God seeks all to join His side and not perish with those who are disobedient. Remember, the world is watching us people of God, so be a good witness for Him.
Special Note: The Old Testament will refer to the descendents of Jacob who were slaves in Egypt as: My people, Hebrews, Sons of Israel, Children of Israel, Israel, Israelites and Jews.
Joshua 2:9-13, Hebrews 11:31 (NASB)
