Years passed by and Isaac grew old and blind. He felt it was time to pass God's blessing on to his son Esau. When his wife Rebekah found out she quickly devised a deceptive plan to fool blind Isaac into giving the blessing to Jacob. Rebekah wanted to do things her way, not God's way. Doing things our way and not God's way is sin. Rebekah prepared Jacob to make Isaac think that he was Esau.
Then Rebekah took the best garments of Esau her elder son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. And she put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck. She also gave the savory food and the bread, which she had made, to her son Jacob. Then he came to his father and said, "My father." And he said, "Here I am. Who are you, my son?" Jacob said to his father, "I am Esau your firstborn ...*
The deceptive plan worked and Jacob got the blessing from blind Isaac. Soon after, things became very ugly.
So Esau bore a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him; and Esau said to himself, "The days of mourning for my father are near; then I will kill my brother Jacob."*
Sin causes separation. In this case, Jacob had to flee for his life and was separated from Rebekah. She never saw her favorite son again.
We know that God loved Jacob and it was God's desire that the blessing would be given to Jacob. Do you think it was necessary for Rebekah to trick her blind husband? Why didn't she pray about the situation instead of taking things into her own hands? One way or another God's plan would have come about. But when we do things our way we sin and suffer the penalty of sin. What is the penalty for sin? Separation is the result of sin and Rebekah felt this penalty very deeply. Sin can separate us from people we love, will separate us from God and in the end separates us from everyone when we die. But God has a plan to save us, to live forever with Him and be reunited with our loved ones. That is the good news!
