Jacob Fools His Dad
God blessed Abraham, and God blessed his son Isaac. Isaac was the recipient of God's special blessing; the blessing to become a great nation and the blessing of having Jesus the Messiah come from his lineage. Later Isaac married Rebekah and she gave birth to twins; two boys: one named Jacob and one named Esau. Jacob knew that God's blessing would pass from his father by birthright to Esau (the oldest) or himself. Jacob really wanted the blessing but Esau could care less. Esau was only interested in satisfying his needs for the day.
When Jacob had cooked stew, Esau came in from the field and he was famished; and Esau said to Jacob, "Please let me have a swallow of that red stuff there, for I am famished." Therefore his name was called Edom. But Jacob said, "First sell me your birthright." Esau said, "Behold, I am about to die; so of what use then is the birthright to me?" And Jacob said, "First swear to me"; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew; and he ate and drank, and rose and went on his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.*
For all those who believe in Jesus as their Lord and Savior, we know that we have been GREATLY blessed by God. The best news we ever hear is that God had mercy on us and sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins so that we could live. We love God and have a special relationship with Him as our Father because of what His Son, Jesus Christ has done for us. Now what if we were to say; "Oh, I don't care about that blessing; I don't care what Jesus did for me. I only want what will make me happy today." How do you think God would feel? Then can you understand why it is recorded in the Bible that God said:
" JACOB I LOVED, BUT ESAU I HATED."*
Always value the blessings that God has given you. Encourage others to understand and value the good news and GREAT blessing we have received from God.
