This week's devotional will start with the story of creation. It will be the beginning of our adventures through the Old Testament.
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters. Then God said, "Let there be light"; and there was light. God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. Then God said, "Let there be an expanse in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters." God made the expanse, and separated the waters which were below the expanse from the waters which were above the expanse; and it was so. God called the expanse heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day.*
When you create something like a cake, how do you make it? You probably bring together different items like sugar and flour and water and more. Then you carefully measure the ingredients in the proper proportions, mix, and bake it in the oven for the proper amount of time. You may notice that anything that man creates must start by bringing together things that already exist. Then people rearrange these items to create cakes, statues, buildings, airplanes, boats, computers and more. This is not the way God created. God simply said "Let there be". From nothing He created the heavens and the earth. God's Word is very powerful.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men.*
The good news is God's Word is living and active today. His Word is moving to take us out of darkness and into His marvelous light.
