Paul journeyed from Caesarea back up the hills to Jerusalem. After visiting with friends he went back to the temple to dedicate days of worship to the Lord.
When the seven days were almost over, the Jews from Asia, upon seeing him in the temple, began to stir up all the crowd and laid hands on him,...Then all the city was provoked, and the people rushed together, and taking hold of Paul they dragged him out of the temple, and immediately the doors were shut. While they were seeking to kill him, a report came up to the commander of the Roman cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion. At once he took along some soldiers and centurions and ran down to them; and when they saw the commander and the soldiers, they stopped beating Paul.
Now Paul had the opportunity to share the reason for his belief in Jesus with the Jewish High Council but they were very very upset with Paul.
And as a great dissension was developing, the commander was afraid Paul would be torn to pieces by them and ordered the troops to go down and take him away from them by force, and bring him into the barracks. But on the night immediately following, the Lord stood at his side and said, "Take courage; for as you have solemnly witnessed to My cause at Jerusalem, so you must witness at Rome also."*
Now the Jews who hated Paul were going to do everything in their power to kill Paul. They still did not realize that God's Spirit and power was with Paul. No matter what they would try to do God was in control and they would lose. Now God encouraged Paul. God told Paul that he did a very good job giving the people in Jerusalem the good news. God's plan was to arrange for Paul to go to Rome to give the good news to the Gentiles. No, Paul was not going to take the next first class flight to Rome. Paul was going to go to Rome God's way. Bound as a prisoner just as Agabus the prophet foretold. God's way is not always the easy way, but His way is the best way and with every adventure Paul would see God working in powerful ways.
