Paul And The Earthquake
It happened that as we were going to the place of prayer, a slave-girl having a spirit of divination met us, who was bringing her masters much profit by fortune-telling. Following after Paul and us, she kept crying out, saying, "These men are bond-servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation." She continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!" And it came out at that very moment. But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the authorities,*
Some men are making a lot of money telling people's fortunes with a slave that was filled by an evil spirit. God has made it very clear that He hates divination, witchcraft, sorcery and fortune telling*. All these are tools that the enemy uses to mislead people. This poor slave girl is filled with a demon who knows that Paul, Timothy and Silas are proclaiming the way of salvation but the demon is seeking to annoy and distract people away from the truth. God's power flows through Paul to put an end of the demon and to it's annoyance. Now the slave girl's masters are only concerned about the money they used to make from the girl's fortune telling. These men do not care about the good news, the girls salvation, their salvation or anyone else's salvation. So they proceed to attack Paul. But even in this God has a wonderful plan to show His power and spread the good news!
