Jesus And The Storm
Based on the Bible but not exactly the Bible.
"Peter, the wind is getting strong and the waves are getting rough. I think you should start rowing back instead of going forward!" Shemer complained. "I can see that! I am the one who is rowing. I told you I have plenty of experience and besides Jesus told us to row to the other side. If you couldn't take the ride you shouldn't have come aboard!" Peter snapped at Shemer although he was getting fearful because the waves were getting rough. "Look, Jesus is asleep in the other boat. He does not know what is happening. Why don't you wake Him up and ask Him if we should go back? He will probably agree with me." Shemer replied. "I told you, I am in control of the situation. Just leave Jesus and me alone!" Peter sternly told Shemer. Shemer kept quiet but mostly because he was getting sea sick. Next time he opened his mouth he may lose his lunch!
When things get out of control what will you do? Like Peter we could be doing exactly what Jesus wants us to do and things seem to go wrong. We seem to be rowing against the wind and the ride gets rough. How would you react? Shemer wanted to turn around and go back. Would you? Or as Peter is doing would you heroically row forward depending on your own good skills and experience? Jesus said:
"These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."*
Tribulation means to have distress or suffering resulting from opposition or persecution. The storm was opposing Peter and Shemer. Did Peter or Shemer look to Jesus to calm their fear? Neither Peter or Shemer realized that Jesus had the power over any storm or trial they may face in this world. God may sometimes seem distant or asleep but He constantly has His eyes on us and knows what we are going through. And that is good news!
