Jesus And The Storm
Based on the Bible but not exactly the Bible.
We are pretending that the scribe jumped into the boat with Jesus' disciples as they embarked for the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Peter asked: "Who are you and what are you doing?" "I am Shemer, and I am traveling with you to keep a written record of the wonderful things that Jesus does. I had hoped to be in the same boat as Jesus but this will do. By the way, are you good with boats?" "Well I am a fisherman and I have spent most of life here on this Sea." replied Peter. "Good! Oh, by the way, weren't you the one who had the very sick Mother that Jesus healed?" Shemer asked. "Yes, but that was my wife's mother." Peter replied sharply, because he was tired from the long day. He continued to row the boat trying to ignore Shemer. Shemer continued to ask questions. "Jesus talks in parables which makes it very hard for me to understand. Did you understand that last one He told just before we left?
"Listen to this! Behold, the sower went out to sow; as he was sowing, some seed fell beside the road, and the birds came and ate it up. "Other seed fell on the rocky ground where it did not have much soil; and immediately it sprang up because it had no depth of soil. "And after the sun had risen, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away..."*
Shemer has some good questions for Peter. Peter is a young disciple of Jesus and he may not have all the answers. Jesus later explained what He was saying in this parable to the disciples because He knew there would be questions.
The sower sows the word. These are the ones who are beside the road where the word is sown; and when they hear, immediately Satan comes and takes away the word which has been sown in them. In a similar way these are the ones on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy; and they have no firm root in themselves, but are only temporary; then, when affliction or persecution arises because of the word, immediately they fall away.*
Shemer does not realize it but very soon he is going to become an excellent example of this. How do you respond to God's Word the Bible? Do you treasure it in your heart? You will find it very helpful to read the Bible and memorize God's Word so when the storm comes you recognize that God is with you and will protect you. And that is good news!
