Based on the Bible but not exactly the Bible. Zola loved his dad very much. Unfortunately Zola's dad had to leave the family. It was not because Zola's dad did not want to be with his family. He desperately missed his wife and children and longed to be able to hug them once more. The problem was that Zola's dad had a disease called leprosy. Because other healthy people can easily catch this disease the law said that a person with leprosy must leave and not live with healthy people. This morning Zola ran out of the city to talk with his dad. Zola had to yell to his dad because he was not supposed to get close. "Dad, Jesus is in our city today. You must come and see Jesus. He can heal you! Please come right away!" Zola's dad had to make a choice. Should he stay away, never to hold his family close again, or should he take a step of faith and go see Jesus?
This week's story is about a man who had leprosy. Leprosy is a disease that works slowly to destroy good parts of the body. People's skin dies and turns white, they can lose fingers, toes and many other parts of the body until they eventually die. Once a person has leprosy he is considered "unclean" and must be separated from all others.* The disease of leprosy is like sin. It can work slowly to destroy us. Sin makes us "unclean" and can separate us from others, even loved ones. But, Jesus has the power to cleanse us from sin just as Jesus has the power to cleanse people from leprosy.* And that is good news!
