This is the true story of a American missionary who traveled far away to the land of Burma. For nearly two years his friends had had no word from him and they did not know whether he was dead or alive. Like Livingston he was lost. He was not lost, however, in a great open continent like Africa, but in a dark, dirty prison. He had been busy translating the Bible into the Burmese language and had nearly completed it, for this man had learned to read when he was only three years old and was a brilliant student of language. He had nearly completed his work when one day, without knowing why, twelve men, one of them having a spotted face, came to his home and bound him with cords and carried him off to prison. The man with the spotted face was the executioner and was a cruel and wicked man. Dr. Judson was put into a dark, dirty stable with no windows and only the cracks between the boards to let in a little air and light.
No matter where you are God is close by. We cannot be lost from God if we know Jesus as our Lord and Savior. Nothing can separate us from the love and presence of God.
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.*
That is good news.. Being in prison is not good. Yet God has a purpose even in this terrible situation. Dr. Judson may not understand the purpose at the moment yet someday he will. As he waits for God to help he must be patient and remember that God loves him.
