Mission - China
When Neng-Kuei became a Christian many things changed in his life. He did not become a minister. He was a basket maker, but few ministers could talk or preach better than he. In that day basket makers were in great demand and Neng-Kuei was the best of all the basket makers. When he became a Christian he refused to work on Sunday, and so lost his top position. Neng-Kuei also refused to make baskets to hold incense which was to be offered before the heathen idols, so he lost more opportunities for work. But he was a good basket maker and no one could make a better basket than he, therefore he was able to find enough work to keep him from begging, and he was happy.
Why didn't Neng-Kuei work on Sunday? God said:
Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath of the LORD your God; in it you shall not do any work...*
For Neug-Kuei Sunday was the sabbath and Jesus encouraged Neug-Kuei to rest from his work. Why didn't Neng-Kuei make baskets for incense? God said:
You shall not make for yourself an idol...You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God.*
Neug-Kuei thought if he were to make the baskets to hold incense for idol worship then that would be serving an idol. Neng-Kuei loved Jesus therefore he was careful to listen to God's Word in the Bible and live a life that would please his Lord. Neng-Kuei knew the good news and it changed his life.
