Mission - Hawaii
Paul was a great missionary that wrote many of the books we have in the New Testament. Now God's work and power did not stop with Paul. God's Spirit is moving in powerful ways even today to change people and bring them to a saving knowledge of Him. This summer we will have true stories about God's work in different parts of the world. This week we will go to Hawaii back many years ago when the missionaries arrived. Kapiolani was the queen of the Hawaiian islands. She was a heathen queen. She worshiped the goddess Pele who had her dwelling in the great burning mountain Kilauea. Whenever the mountain burned and sent up smoke and flame the priest of Pele came among the people and told them that the goddess was hungry and called for food. Then he would choose someone from among the people, perhaps a bride or a little child, some young man or stalwart warrior, and present a peace offering to the goddess, casting the human sacrifice into the mouth of the volcano. Kapiolani was even worse that the priest of Pele, for she too was ignorant and cruel and superstitious.
When people do not know the one true God they can be cruel and superstitious because they are afraid. They fear because the gods they create in their minds and with their hands are evil gods. This is one reason why the one true God hates the worship of false gods. God loves people and would like them to know who He is. He is not some evil god that lives in a volcano. He is not some god that is made of stone. God the Father wants us to know Him. Jesus said:
If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you know Him, and have seen Him.*
The good news is, if we know Jesus as our Lord and Savior then we can know the one true God.
